Allergies and hay fever

What we can help with

  • Hay fever

Sneezing, a runny or blocked nose and itchy eyes, often worse in spring.

  • Prescription treatment

When pharmacy options aren't enough, your GP can prescribe where appropriate.

  • Allergy testing

Referrals for skin prick or blood tests to find out what you're allergic to.

  • Thunderstorm asthma

If you have hay fever, spring storms can trigger severe asthma. Your GP can help you prepare.

  • Allergy specialists

Referrals to an immunologist, including for long-term desensitisation treatment.

  • Food allergies

What's thunderstorm asthma?

On some spring days, storms can break up pollen into tiny particles that trigger sudden, severe asthma, even in people who've never had asthma. People with hay fever are at higher risk. Talk to your GP about a plan before spring.

Can I get allergy testing through telehealth?

Your GP can assess your symptoms and refer you for skin prick or blood tests, which are done in person.

Can you prescribe stronger hay fever treatment?

Yes, where appropriate. Your GP will review what you've tried and what's safe for you.

What if I have a severe allergy?

If you've had a severe reaction, you need an action plan and may need an adrenaline auto-injector. Your GP can help and refer you to a specialist.

Can children be treated?

Yes, with a parent or carer on the call.
